OpenAI Projects $100 Billion in Annual Ad Revenue by 2030, Targets Global Advertising Duopoly

Internal investor documents reveal ChatGPT's early ad pilot crossed $100 million in annualized revenue within six weeks, with projections scaling to $11 billion by 2027 and $53 billion by 2029.

OpenAI Projects $100 Billion in Annual Ad Revenue by 2030, Targets Global Advertising Duopoly

OpenAI expects to generate $2.5 billion in advertising revenue in 2026 and $100 billion annually by 2030, according to a source familiar with recent investor presentations, Axios reported on April 9. The projections mark a decisive pivot for the ChatGPT maker from a primarily subscription-based model toward a direct challenge to the digital advertising businesses of Google and Meta.

The company launched an experimental ad tier for free and low-cost ChatGPT users in the United States earlier in 2026. According to a spokesperson, that pilot reached more than $100 million in annualized revenue within six weeks of launch, giving OpenAI the proof of concept it needed for a broader rollout.

Investors have been told to expect ad revenue to nearly quadruple to roughly $11 billion in 2027, then reach $25 billion in 2028 and $53 billion in 2029 before crossing the $100 billion threshold in 2030.

The projections assume that OpenAI's products will attract approximately 2.75 billion weekly active users by 2030, capturing an expanding share of the global digital advertising market currently dominated by Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, and TikTok. OpenAI's advertising format, branded as intent-based placement, is designed to surface relevant product or service suggestions at the conclusion of AI-generated responses rather than through traditional banner or display formats.

The disclosures come as OpenAI, which closed a $122 billion funding round in March 2026 at an $852 billion valuation, prepares for a potential initial public offering as early as the fourth quarter of 2026. Analysts have noted that an advertising business of the scale OpenAI is projecting would fundamentally alter competitive dynamics in search, content delivery, and digital commerce.
