Meta AI app rockets from No. 57 to No. 5 in the U.S. App Store after Muse Spark launch, with downloads up 87% in a day
The surge in installs suggests Muse Spark may have revived consumer interest in Meta's AI product, which has lagged well behind ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini.
The Meta AI app surged from the 57th spot to No. 5 in the U.S. App Store within 24 hours of the Muse Spark launch on April 8, according to data from market intelligence firm Appfigures reported by TechCrunch on April 9. Sensor Tower separately estimated that the app received approximately 46,000 U.S. iOS downloads on April 8 — an 87 percent increase day-over-day — while daily web visitors to Meta AI reached an all-time high, rising more than 570 percent compared to the previous 30-day average.
The download jump is a meaningful signal for Meta, which has struggled to establish a consumer AI foothold despite having the largest potential distribution of any company in the sector through its Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp platforms. Muse Spark's launch marked the first model release under Alexandr Wang, the former Scale AI CEO who Zuckerberg recruited last year to lead Meta Superintelligence Labs.
Despite the surge, Meta AI still trails significantly in the app store rankings: ChatGPT holds the No. 1 position, followed by Anthropic's Claude at No. 2 and Google's Gemini at No. 3. Wang acknowledged the ranking milestone on X, noting that the app was "still growing."
Meta has accumulated 60.5 million total worldwide installs of its AI app across the App Store and Google Play, with 25 million of those downloads coming in 2026 alone. India is now Meta AI's top market by downloads, ahead of the United States, Brazil, Pakistan, and Mexico — a geographic distribution that reflects Meta's global reach and suggests non-English AI markets may be an important differentiator for the company's strategy.
The model will roll out to WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Meta's AI glasses in the weeks ahead.
