Microsoft announced on March 31 that it will invest more than $1 billion in Thailand between 2026 and 2028, focused on cloud and AI data center infrastructure alongside workforce training and digital governance initiatives. The announcement came after a meeting in Bangkok between Microsoft Vice Chair and President Brad Smith and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and is part of the company's broader Advancing National Growth initiative that frames AI infrastructure investment as a tool for national economic competitiveness.

At the core of the commitment is construction of data center infrastructure in Thailand built to Microsoft's global standards for reliability, security, and sustainability, including green energy and water-positive operations. The facilities will give Thai organizations direct access to Azure cloud services and AI tools without routing data outside the country, addressing the data sovereignty concerns that have complicated cloud adoption in many Southeast Asian markets.

On the workforce side, Microsoft is partnering with Thailand's Ministry of Labour Department of Skill Development to upskill and certify 150,000 workers, with more than 280 Microsoft AI courses available in Thai on the government's online training platform. The company is also expanding the National Digital Learning Platform in partnership with the Ministry of Education, currently reaching more than 600,000 students with AI-enhanced tools designed to standardize educational quality across provinces.

Smith told reporters that over two million people in Thailand have already received AI-related training through Microsoft programs over the past two years, and that the new investment will accelerate both the infrastructure and skills dimensions of Thailand's AI transition. The commitment follows similar Microsoft country-level investments announced in Japan, Indonesia, and Malaysia earlier in 2026 as the company builds out its Asia-Pacific AI footprint.
